High Contrast Horse Hair Reduction
Pieces produced in this method use horse hair burned onto a hot pot to create interesting surface patterns, usually on a white clay body to provide better contrast,  When the pot is dry, but before the bisque firing, the pottery is often coated with layers of a solution of very fine clay particles called Terra Sigillata, and burnished to provide a smooth surface.  After the bisque firing, the piece of pottery is re-heated (in a standard kiln) to about 1000 degrees F and pulled out while still hot.  As the horse hair is laid across the surface of the pot, it burns, and leaves behind irregular lines, while the smoke created leaves shadows.  Other combustibles (feathers, paper, etc.) and substances such as sugar can be used to vary and enhance the results.
Pit Firing
Pit firing is one of the oldest and simplest firing methods.  A pit (or container) is used as the firing chamber and contains the heat of the burning combustibles (such as wood, paper and sawdust) placed around ht pieces of bisque-ware pottery.  The smoke and carbon present create the finish on the pottery; color variations can result from the temperature of the fire, the combustibles used, and the addition of salts and minerals.
