Raku is based on an ancient Japanese firing method of the same name. The 1st part of the process is in glazing a piece of bisque-ware pottery with a specially formulated glaze. The pottery is then placed in a Raku kiln, which is allowed to reach a temperature of around 1800 degrees F. Once the pottery is at the right temperature and the glaze reaches a certain consistency, the kiln is opened up, and using protective clothing and metal tongs, the pot is pulled out (the pottery glows red hot). The pot is then placed into a metal container (such as a trash can) containing combustibles like sawdust, paper and/or leaves. These combustibles catch on fire upon contact with the hot pot. A lid is then placed on the container, creating a reduction atmosphere (carbon rich). The carbon (absorbed into the unglazed portions of the pot, turning that clay black), along with the smoke and flames, interacting with the pottery surface and glazing, causes the effects that make the Raku finish so beautiful and unique. After a little while, the pottery is removed from the container and allowed to cool. Rinsing the pot reveals the final results (never quite the same from batch to batch).
